The nearest accommodation to the
end of the well-known mountain biking route "The 42 Traverse" in
Owhango, central North Island.
Southern Lake Taupo has some of the best mountain bike country in New Zealand. We know trails that ride through ancient beech forests, alongside magnificent trout rivers and past huge volcanoes.
We also have exclusive access to 3,800 hectares of trails including a genuine backcountry sheep station.

The Waikato River Trails are a link series of sections from Horahora near Karapiro on HW1, to Atiamuri on HW1. The trails follow the Waikato River and Hydro-Lakes and are divided into those sections. 100km of trails of which 50km are in the Taupo District run past Lakes Karapiro, Arapuni, Waipapa, Maraetai and Whakamaru.

I have only done the Maraetai to Atiamuri sections and can say the trails are superbly constructed with a 70m suspension bridge, multiple board walks, all weather surfaces and the scenery is spectacular. Mangakino to Atiamuri is Grade 2 so suitable for all riders. Mtn bikes and hybrids are suitable.
