Dear Member,

Wow, welcome to the inaugural
Bike Taupo Advocacy Groups newsletterat last!
There has been a really good response to the inception of BTAG and so far our membership has soared above the 270 mark - a figure that is sure to grow and is sure to turn a few heads when we need support on future projects in our mission to help raise the awareness of cycling and cyclists in Taupo and beyond. So thank you for joining!

One reason for waiting so long before addressing the assembled masses was that we on the committee wanted to have some news worthy of CAPITAL LETTERS to bring you! And now we have it. As of last week, following a bit of to-ing and fro-ing between the organizations involved we have succeeded in securing all of the necessary bits of paper, number eight wire, shovels and permits that will allow cyclists of all abilities to ride to HUKA FALLS!

Yup, thats right, after a couple of months spent in holding pattern, the all clear was given to allow construction to begin on building the ‘ROTARY RIDE’ - a classic trail of twisting switch-backs, gentle climbs and sweeping descents nestled in gullies of native bush and creeping alongside rambling pastureland. No longer will you have to feel guilty as you lift your bike over the Dont Go There! sign on the existing Huka Falls trail because very soon youll be able to cruise the clear trails from the heart of the booming metropolis of Taupo Central to the pounding majesty of Huka Falls without stepping off your bike.

Thanks in particular must go to Taupo Moana Rotary Club and Patuiwi Reserve Trust, Landcorp Farming Ltd, Department Of Conservation and Taupo District Council who have donated funds and allowed their land to be used for the ultimate in slick off-road riding that will bring bike-shed loads of enjoyment for all the family.

Yes, thats right; the ‘ROTARY RIDE’ will be constructed with the family of cyclists in mind - meaning that anyone who can pedal a treadle, or turn a crank will be able to enjoy the benefits of this magnificent trail. The expertise of a bunch of willing organizations such as Cheal Consultants, Tarrant Contracting, Murtagh Lymburn, Benchmark Building Supplies and Lake Hire will smooth the trail-building. And dont worry if you feel youre missing out! Therell be plenty of opportunity to muck in and get your hands dirty in helping build Taupos premiere off-road cycle route.

Thanks must also go to numerous other sponsors and organizations that have made this dream become a reality, such as Alan Vane at Le Pine & Co Solicitors, Suncourt Motor Inn, Ground Effect Cycle Clothing and NZ Forest Managers.

Every little bit helps and its due to the support of all of these organizations and individuals who realize the benefits and enjoyment of cycling that will help promote Taupo as New Zealands premiere cycling destination and a leader in cycle awareness.

Watch this space for further developments on the ‘ROTARY RIDE’ and a few surprises in store...

Thanks for your membership.
