SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS:
Media and Promotion:
1. Safety Shell: Thomas organised
delivery of the 20 Safety Shells for backpacks from Go to Wo Marketing. He obtained a quote from Taupo Screenprints
for putting Bike Taupo
on each pack. $112 inclusive of set up
for the whole 20. The committee agreed
to go ahead with screen-printing. Lizzy will take over this project and will look at giving away a few
at the Freewheeling Fun Day this month and Bikewise Week next year and the
summer tris. She will look at
approaching schools with a view to them distributing among cycling children.
Website/Membership:
1. Up to 1019 members.
2. Mountain Bike Club page is working well.
3. Mike has offered to contact the Cycle Club regarding putting a link or
their page on Bike Taupo. He believes they are in the processing of
setting up a website.
4. Mike and Lizzy have been added to the committee group email address
and have committee access around the website when they log on.
Submissions:
1. Horse Strategy - John submitted on our behalf
2. Draft Walking and Cycling Strategy - Richard and Thomas prepared an
automatic submission and sent to all members for them to add their name etc
and any additional comments. All
agreed that this is a great way to submit and well look at doing the same
for future submissions.
3. Foreshore Management Plan is due in 5 December - Richard will put
together a submission for Bike Taupo
and for members to use.
Funding/Projects:
Gullies now has its own subtitle (see below)
Maintenance:
1. Pete
McFarlane is now predominantly doing
maintenance works for Bike Taupo
due to Craigs own busy work schedule.
2. Hes scrub-barred Redwoods track and had the slashers through the
Rotary Ride and started at Wairakei. Tracks are looking good - normally in spring its overgrown.
3. Pete will purchase a cycle trailer for tools - $320 from Corner Shop.
4. The volunteers continue to be a great asset to Bike
Taupo. The decision of paying to do the ‘boring’ maintenance and having
volunteers doing the cool stuff like track building is working well.

Wairakei Forest Mountain Bike System
1. Still chugging along great.
2. Ramps have been installed over fences to open up the track system into
the old Hansel and Gretel block. Silver windmills have been put on these ramps to discourage horses
from attempting an escape. Apparently
the movement and light reflection ensures horses will not approach them.
3. Getting closer to finding a key sponsor for Wairakei
Forest
Mountain
Bike Park. The relationship will hopefully be
finalised in the next two weeks.
4. Wairakei
Tourist
Park
is apparently looking at ways of drawing more tourists into the area.
W2K Track
1. Still waiting for final comments from the iwi of the area. They have been difficult to track
down. Lizzy said she may be able to
help in this area. Things are on hold until this is sorted out.
2. Pete and Richard are to bring budget back to committee.
Gully Tracks
1. Titoki
Avenue gully track is all go. Alignment of the track is confirmed. Lisa has signed the Memorandum of
Understanding as seen by the committee by email. This memorandum will apply to all
gullies. Pete
McFarlane will be in there by Monday 14th November with the digger.
2. On Wednesday (yesterday) the Council met again with Lisa, Pete
McFarlane and Richard for a walk through
the Harvey Street
gully. A track route has been identified
and is currently being looked at by Chris Todd (he has storm water issues at
the top end of the gully which will need to be avoided when putting any track
in).
3. Lisa and Thomas also attended a Taupo Moana Rotary dinner on
Monday. They reported on the
happenings of Bike Taupo,
particularly the plans re the gully tracks.
4. Lisa to prepare letters to Transit regarding possible culverts under
State Highway 5 and 1.
GENERAL BUSINESS:
1. Speed Limits submission: Committee
feels it a good idea to check on progress re the recent submission. Not heard much to date. Looks as though Huka
Falls Road in
particular may only be reduced from Rangatira
Park
to Reids Farm. Lisa will prepare a
letter to Mike Keys (cc the Mayor) reiterating the factors requiring
consideration. These being: Helistar and Huka
Falls
are major tourist destinations with Huka attracting some 800,000 visitors per
annum. Many road cyclists and mountain
bikers use this road to avoid the main highway. There is Huka Lodge and a motor camp on
this road with many frequenters during the summer - many of these users walk
to Huka Falls and there is not a lot of safe access along the roadside and
finally DoC close the gates at Huka Falls at 6pm and in the warmer months its
not uncommon to see around 15-20 cars parked on the roadside in a 100km zone.
2. Rotary Ride ownership - Doc have approached us to change the understanding of ownership of Rotary
Ride to that similar to what W2K will be. This will include track and
bridges. Apparently its too hard for
DoC to include. An agreement will be
written up in this regard. Bike
Taupo committee stressed its
disappointment with this turn around on DoCs commitment to the track - its
not exactly a good example of them working with communities. Committee decided it would be a good idea
to barter for ownership of the Waikato
walkway and Aratiatia walkway as well plus $5,000 worth of track
matting. Pete to liaise and barter.
3. Gun Club land DoC have agreed we can approach the Gun
Club directly regarding re-aligning the track through their leased land. We are free to remind the Gun Club that by
us taking the edge for a track their leased land is less and therefore their
rent will be adjusted which may be favourable with the rent review coming up! Pete will approach Gun Club in person -
decided thats better than a letter.
4. Wairakei Seven Wise Men - they are duly reappointed for another years service.
5. Action Plan: Richard
prepared a draft action plan for 2006. It was discussed with the
committee and a couple of extras added. Committee will think on
it some more and then Richard will present the final Plan by
email.
6. Broadlands
Road Surface - Mike brought up the fact that the road surface is terrible and dangerous
due to council continuing to patch up the holes etc. It would be great to see the whole road to
Reporoa widened due to the amount of cycle traffic frequenting it. All agreed to make it part of the Action Plan
2006 that Council addresses this problem.
7. Xmas Ride/Bash - Committee
agreed to do something similar to last year. Date will be 18th December 3pm meeting at Helistar for a
ride around Wairakei and then to finish with some drinks and food at Helistar
Caf. Lisa will look into options at
Helistar and then prepare an email invite for sending to all members.
Meeting closed 9:25pm
