Mid North Island Championship Series 2009
Results
Round 1 at Taupo produced some fast times on an excellent day.
Mike Northcott of Tokoroa was the fastest person there, but only by 8 seconds. Read more to see the story and the full table of results.

The Mid North Island mountain biking championship series started off this weekend with a large crowd and some fast times, in the well known Wairakei Forest, Taupo. Round One saw 107 riders taking part from the wider region, with some amazingly fast times on the testing 33 km course. The day was excellent, with dry mild weather, and the forest tracks were in great condition, apart from some dust after the recent dry spell. Mike Northcott of Tokoroa, racing in the open class, achieved a blistering time of 1 hour 39 minutes and 43 seconds, showing the skills and fitness one would expect of a rider who has represented NZ overseas. Ash Hough of Tauranga, racing in the same class, was only 8 seconds behind him. Carwyn May of Taupo, riding in the 30 to 39 years age group, and always a force to reckon with, was the third fastest person on the course. And not letting the old blokes have it all their own way, under 19 years of age junior man Mathew Waghorn of Fielding was fourth fastest person with a time of 1:46:21. Then, spread over about the next 9 minutes came vet 30/39 Garth Weinberg of Rotorua, open class Darry Stevens of New Plymouth, vet 30/39 Alex Fierro of Taupo, another under 19 years junior man Alex Roberts of Taupo, vet 30/39 Maurice Ebbett of Pahiatua, and vet over 40 years of age Peter Calnan of Rotorua.
Perhaps it was a little tough on them, but the under 15 years of age junior girls also rode the same demanding 33 km course. First junior girl home was Mylinda Miller of Taumarunui, in a very commendable 2 hours 40 minutes and 58 seconds. Keryn Knight of Fielding came first in the under 19 years of age junior woman's class, in a time of 2:35:24, and fastest woman on the course, Raewyn Morrison of Auckland took out first place in the Open Women category in an outstanding time of 2:01:35. In the veteran women class, with riders of age 30 years up, Marguerite Ritchie of Hamilton achieved first place.
